How I Met My Husband

Updated: Mar 29, 2022

It was our first year at college. Asher had just come home from a church mission and I had just graduated high school. In the morning I had a chemistry class with a teacher who would always go past the time when class was supposed to end. I only had about 3 minutes every day to go clear across campus to my next class which was interior design. One day, I walked into my interior design class really late and there was only one seat available, right next to this curly-haired boy. I asked him if I could sit and he said yes.

Every day on the board there would be a prompt about interior design that we would need to write an answer to and then share it with our neighbor. I was still in the middle of writing mine when that curly-haired boy turned to me and said “Chocolate.” I looked at him, confused. He then went on to explain how that was the answer that he had written for the prompt on the board. I thought this was a very strange answer for a prompt about interior design and immediately thought of him as a nerd. Before I could tell him what I had answered for the prompt, he was telling me all kinds of things about chocolate. Before I knew it, we were talking non-stop about everything chocolate. That is until the teacher yelled at us… Yup. In an auditorium of about 150 students, the teacher called us out and told us to be quiet. It was so embarrassing. I had been a very quiet and straight-A high school student, so getting yelled at in college was totally devastating. But that didn’t stop our conversation. We just started to whisper even more quietly. I asked this curly-haired boy what his name was and he replied “Asher Gunsay. Like gun say boom.” Again, I thought he was a nerd…

I went to work that afternoon and told my co-workers that I had met a boy in one of my classes. They all teased and asked if it could go anywhere. I told them all no, that he was too weird for me to have a relationship with, but that he was pretty cute and fun to talk to.

A couple of weeks went by with the same old routine. I would walk into class late, and every time I did, the cute curly-haired boy (I forgot his name by this point) would turn around and give me a shy smile. I would sit in the back and then leave class as soon as it was done to make it to my next class on time.

After a couple of weeks passed, I remember walking into class late again one day. I looked around for an empty seat near the back. That’s when I saw him. That curly-haired boy was sitting near the back and next to him was an empty seat with a backpack in it. I walked over to him and asked if I could sit there. He removed his backpack and said, “Of course!”. While we worked on the prompt, I peeked over his shoulder at his name written on the top of his paper. Asher. I quickly wrote it down in my notebook on a different page and covered it in hopes that he wouldn't see. Again, we spent that class time talking and getting to know each other. I was starting to like this boy more and more.

Every day when I would walk into class, Asher would be sitting with his backpack in the chair next to him, saving it for me. One day though, I had come in really late and Asher was sitting a few rows up from his usual seating place. I decided to stay in the back this time to not make a scene. Asher looked back and gave me another shy smile and removed his backpack from the chair. The entire class period, I thought about what to do once class ended. Did I wait for him at the door to say hi or did I continue on my way? I decided to wait by the door. Asher looked so surprised when he saw that I was waiting there for him. From that day on, we walked together every day after class. Although I was late for my next class on many occasions…

This went on for a few weeks and I started to wonder if he was ever going to ask me out. One day, he finally got up the courage to ask.

“What are you doing this weekend?”

I was so excited as the butterflies went crazy inside my stomach. “I’m not doing anything…”

“Oh… I’m working.”

What? My bubble definitely burst. Asher told me later that he was going to ask me out, but he was so nervous that he forgot he had work that weekend. He didn’t remember this until he was in the process of asking me out. Haha

So, I waited a couple more weeks and he finally asked me out! We went to a corn maze and talked non-stop the entire time. It was the best date ever. And the rest is history. We went through a lot of ups and downs during our relationship, including me breaking up with him to serve a church mission, and him leaving to take a job in Provo. I was gone for 5 months on my mission but was sent home for surgery. While I was at home recovering, Asher was by my side the entire time. We got married 9 months after I came home, and it was the best day of my life. Now we have a beautiful family, and a life we wouldn't trade for anything.
